The two-hour rule, and why four matters

Perishable food should not sit out longer than two hours, or one hour when the room or car is above 90°F, according to USDA. Bacteria multiply fastest between 40°F and 140°F. Restaurant rules in the FDA Food Code allow at most four hours in that range before food must be thrown out, reheated or not. Set a 2 hour timer when you put out a buffet, and treat four hours as the point of no return.

Half-day shifts and parking

Four hours is a half-day shift, a long tutoring block, or the limit in many hospital and airport garages. For a shift, set 4:00 and take one fifteen-minute break near the midpoint. For parking, set 3:50 so you are walking back before the limit, and see the parking timer.

Keeping it running

Long timers need the tab open and the device awake. Phones lock and mute browser audio, so raise Auto-Lock or keep the phone plugged in with the screen on.
