Meeting timer
A free meeting timer that opens on 30 minutes and can be put on a shared screen or a video call so everyone sees the same countdown. A phone timer belongs to one person; a timer on the big screen belongs to the meeting. Also searched as meeting countdown, agenda timer, standup timer.
An agenda, timeboxed
| Item | Minutes | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in and purpose | 2 | 2 |
| Updates | 10 | 12 |
| Discussion | 15 | 27 |
| Decisions | 5 | 32 |
| Actions and owners | 3 | 35 |
That is 35 minutes. For a 30-minute slot, cut updates to five and ask people to post them in writing beforehand. Run one timer per item rather than one for the whole meeting: press R, click the digits, type the next length, press Enter. The alarm is the signal to move on, not the signal to start wrapping up.
Daily standup in 15 minutes
- Set the 15 minute timer fullscreen on the room display, or share the tab in the call.
- Give each person one to two minutes. With a team of eight, set two minutes, tick Repeat, and the alarm passes the turn.
- Anything that needs discussion goes on a list for after the standup.
Speaking turns and round-robins
For retrospectives, interviews or panel discussions, set the turn length, tick Repeat and let the bell do the interrupting. People accept a timer ending their turn far better than a colleague doing it. Choose the Bell sound, which is clear but not harsh over a microphone.
Sharing the timer in a video call
Share the browser tab rather than the whole screen. Press F first so the digits are large in the thumbnail. On a conference-room display, dark mode (the moon button) glares less.
Longer sessions fit the 30 minute timer or the 1 hour timer. For the thinking behind fixed slots, read the time boxing guide, and for talks inside a meeting use the presentation timer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I time each agenda item separately?
Press R to reset, click the digits, type the minutes for the next item and press Enter. The timer starts immediately.
Can everyone on a video call see the timer?
Yes. Share the browser tab in your meeting software. Press F first so the countdown fills the shared window.
What is a good length for a standup?
Fifteen minutes is the standard. About one to two minutes per person keeps a team of eight inside the limit.
