French press, step by step

  1. Rinse the press with hot water and add 30 g of coarse coffee.
  2. Pour 450 g of water just off the boil and start the timer.
  3. At 1 minute, stir gently and put the lid on without pressing.
  4. At 4 minutes, press slowly and pour everything out so it does not keep extracting.

Pour-over timing

Start the timer with the first pour. Bloom with about 40 g of water for 30 to 45 seconds, then add the rest in two or three slow pours. The bed should drain by about 3 to 4 minutes; if it takes much longer, grind coarser. The 3 minute timer is a good target for a single cup.

Cold brew

Combine coarse grounds and cold water, cover and refrigerate. Run the 12 hour timer for an overnight batch, keeping the tab open on a device that stays awake, or simply note the clock. Strain and dilute 1:1 with water or milk.

Making tea instead? The tea timer has steep times by type, and the cooking timer hub covers the rest of the kitchen.

Frequently asked questions

How long should French press coffee steep?

Four minutes is the standard. Stir after about one minute, then press slowly at four. A coarser grind can take up to five minutes.

What is the bloom in pour-over coffee?

The first pour of about twice the coffee's weight in water, left for 30 to 45 seconds. It lets gas escape from fresh grounds so the main pour extracts evenly.

How long does cold brew take?

Twelve to eighteen hours in the fridge at a strong ratio, then dilute to taste. Longer than that tends to taste woody.
